Ploegsteert

Ploegsteert is a municipality in Belgium located at 50°43′28″N, 2°52′41″E in Hainaut province. It is approximately 2 kilometers north of the French border. Created in 1850 on part of the territory of Warneton, it includes the hamlet of Bizet.

The nearby Ploegsteert Wood was the site of fierce WWI fighting. Winston Churchill stayed there from January to May 1916[1]. The Ploegsteert Memorial[2] commemorates more than 11,000 missing British Commonwealth servicemen who died in the area during that time.

  • Ploegsteert is home to a Carpentry Museum[3].
  • It was declared a sister city of Wolverton, England in 2006; this was partly initiated through the finding of letters[4] from a 16 year old soldier from Wolverton named Albert French.
