civil and political rights
civil and political rights relate to the treatment of the individual both as an individual and as a member of a wider society. Their main function is to protect people from the actions of oppressive governments. the principle instrument(an international instrument is a legal agreement such as a treaty or protocol that binds nations to certain behaviors) is the international covenant on civil and political rights, which was adopted in 1966 and came into force in 1976. In it, all parties agree to respect all individual rights established under the covenant, including the rights to life, freedom of expression, freedom to participate in public life, equality before the law and others.
