Pop Snyder

Charles N. "Pop" Snyder (October 6, 1854 - October 29, 1924) was an American catcher and manager in Major League Baseball who played for the Washington Blue Legs, the Baltimore Canaries, and the Philadelphia Whites of the National Association, and after the league folded, he joined the Louisville Grays of the newly-formed National League. After two years, he joined the Boston Red Caps, winning the NL pennant in the 1878 season. In 1882, he joined the newly formed Cincinnati Red Stockings of the American Association, winning the pennant as a player-manager. After a third-place finish in 1883, he gave up the managerial duties to pitcher Will White, but he replaced him despite a 44-27 mark after 71 games. In 1887, he joined the Cleveland Blues but his playing time diminished with each season despite him being in his early thirties. He felt he wasn't being treated fairly enough by his team, so in 1890, he abandoned the Blues (renamed the Spiders when they jumped to the NL) and joined the Cleveland Infants of the short-lived Players League. In 1891, at the age of 36, he returned for one last stint as a player/manager with the Washington Statesmen, and he retired from baseball that same year.

He died in his birthplace of Washington, D.C. at the age of 70.
