Pope Benjamin of Alexandria
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
His Holiness Benjamin was the Coptic Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark (622 - 667). His papacy witnessed three ruling systems in Egypt as it was ruled by the Sassanid Empire at its beginning followed by the return of Byzantines rule during which Pope Benjamin went into exile and finally by the Arabs upon their conquest. After the Arab conquest Pope Benjamin was allowed by the Arab rulers to come back to Alexandria and resume his work, after a period he had to go into hiding from the Byzantines.
Arab rulers allowed the Copts to practice their religion as long as they pay the higher tax (gezya).
