The River Dargle flows over the Powerscourt Waterfall, falling 121 metres. This makes it the highest waterfall in Ireland. It is located in Enniskerry in County Wicklow, and is situated in a valley surrounded by Djouce Mountain and the Great Sugar Loaf.
The waterfall and surrounding valley are owned by the Powerscourt Estate.
There is an anecdote, which tells of Richard Wingfield, 5th Viscount Powerscourt damming the waterfall in August, 1821, so that while entertaining his guest, King George IV, he could release a torrent while the two stood on the bridge below the falls. Luckily, the king was unable to leave the banquet at Powerscourt Estate, because when the water was released, the bridge was washed away. [1]
