Preah Ko

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Preah Ko (Khmer, The Sacred Bull) was the first temple to be built on the site of Hariharālaya (presently Roluos), south-east of the main group of temples at Angkor, Cambodia. Preah Ko was also the first to be built by Indravarman I in 879.[1]

Preah Ko (Sacred Bull) derives its name from the many bull statues located in the front of Preah Ko's central towers.[2]

Preah Ko was built due to a building program which was enabled by King Indravarmans (nephew of Jayavarman II} peaceful reign and income from expanding the Khmer Empire.

The temple is distinguished from others due to its unique arrangement of its six towers that stand in two rows facing east, the front central tower is the tallest. The dedications of Preah Ko, which were made in 880, were to a devaraja (tutelary divinity)[3] of King Indravarman. [4] The front central tower is dedicated to Jayavarman II, which was the founder of the Preah Ko and the Khmer empire.[5] The tower to the left is dedicated to Prithivindreshvara, King Indravarman's father; the tower to the right to Rudreshvara, his grandfather; three rear towers are dedicated to each of their wives.[6] The central towers all have images of the Hindu god, Shiva.
