Presidency College, Chennai

Presidency College is in Chennai, India and is considered to be the precursor of the University of Madras. It was founded in 1840 by Thiru Eyre Burton Powell. When the University of Madras was founded in 1857, Presidency College got affiliated to it. The college moved to its present location in Kamaraj Salai in 1870. It is just opposite to one of the famous landmark “Marina” which is the second largest beach in the world.
The Nobel laureates Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, Dr. Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar and Abel Prize laureate Srinivasa Varadhan were alumni of the Presidency college.
It was ranked the no. 1 science college in India in 2001 and no. 1 arts college in India in 2002 by India Today. This college also serves the society by educating the economically poor and socially under-privileged communities with an affordable fee structure.

Centres of Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) for the promotion of Biology Teaching Through Bioinformatics (BTBI) have recommended 52 Institutes for the establishment of Bioinformatics centres. The Presidency College, Chennai is one among the 52 Institutes and it would be the first government college to provide this facility in Tamil Nadu.
The Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, has granted twenty lakh rupees to Presidency College, Chennai to start a bioinformatics centre that would use new technology to promote Biology teaching and research. Ten computers with high-speed access would be connected to a nationwide network of biotechnology resource centres.
Dr. S. Rajarajan, Head, Department of Microbiology and President of IABMS (Indian Association of Biomedical Scientists) will coordinate this centre. This bioinformatics centre will focus on drug development and the Softwares on genomics and pharmacological sciences will also be available at this centre. Students from other colleges would also be given access to use these facilities. [The 4,000-student strong college will also offer an updated curriculum beginning the next academic year].
