SS President Coolidge
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The SS President Coolidge was a luxury ocean liner that messured 654ft in length and was originally built, along with her sister ship the SS President Hoover, for Dollar Steamship Lines. In 1938, when the Dollar Line collapsed, she was transferred to American President Lines. During 1941 she was converted to carrying troops in the South Pacific.
She was sunk on the shores of Espiritu Santo, Vanuatu, on October 26, 1942, when she accidentally ran into two friendly mines that had been laid to protect the harbour. This incident resulted in two lives lost.[1]
She is now the most easily accessible shipwreck for divers in the world, lying in 70-240ft of water. She is most famous for 'The Lady', a wall fresco of a lady with a unicorn which is located in the first class smoking room.
