The winners of Primera D gain automatic promotion to Primera C Metropolitana, the 5 highest finishers behind the champions go into a playoff series, the winner of which will face the 2nd worst team from Primera C in a promotion/relegation playoff.

The team that finishes bottom of Primera D faces relegation, because Primera D is the lowest league in the Argentine football system relegation means that the relegated team won't participate in the AFA league system for a season.

Primera D was created in 1974 when the Argentine Football Association reorganized the defunct Aficionados league which was held between 1962 and 1973. Prior to Aficionados, the category was called Tercera de Ascenso between 1950 and 1961.
