Prince Jean was educated in Luxembourg, Switzerland and France, where he obtained his baccalaureate. He then undertook a language course in England.

In 1977, Prince Jean began his military officer training at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, England. He was made a captain of the Luxembourg Army in 1979. In 1986 he obtained an MBA from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France.

On 27 May 1987, Prince Jean married Hélène Vestur, now a judge, in Paris. His wife and children bore the title "Count(ess) of Nassau", until raised to the style and title of "HRH Prince(ss) of Nassau". The prince and princess are now divorced, having had four children together:

On 24 November 2004, Prince Jean's wife and children were granted the style and title "HRH Prince(ss) of Nassau". Subsequently, the prince and princess were divorced.

Prince Jean works in the water industry for Degrémont-Suez, a subsidiary of Suez, where he is currently the Vice-President. It is unclear what his exact function is. His former wife and children presumably still live in Paris.
