In Greece, the provinces (Greek: επαρχία) were a sub-division of prefecture. According to the Article 7 of the Code of Prefectural Self-Government (Presidential Decree 30/1996), the provinces constituted a "particular administrative district" within the "administrative district" of the prefecture. Not all prefectures are subdivided into provinces. Provinces ceased to consist a form of administrative division after the 16th October 2006 regional elections.
Provinces dispose of two organs:
- A collective one, the Provincial Council.
- An one-member organ, the Eparchos ( Sub-prefect, έπαρχος).
Members of the Provincial Council are the prefectural councillors of the respective province. Sub-prefect becomes the prefectural councillor who took the more votes in the prefectural elections and belongs to the combination governing the prefecture.
