Psychiko (Greek:Ψυχικό; older form Psychikon) is a suburb of Athens, Greece.

Psychiko is located to the south of the Olympic stadium. Psychiko is divided in two municipalities, Psychiko (which is sometimes referred to as Palio Psychiko or Paleo Psychiko) and Neo Psychiko.

Psychiko is a strictly residential suburb of Athens, with commercial businesses allowed only within two small designated zones, the "Nea Agora" (New Market) and the "Palia Agora" (Old Market). Current regulations restrict buildings to be fully detached, with a maximum of 3 floors. Psychiko was formerly home to many aristocrats and people of royalty. It remains to be one of the wealthiest suburbs of Athens, with very high land value. Many embassies—especially those of Middle Eastern countries—are located in Psychiko and Neo Psychiko and some are in neighbouring Filothei. It is widely considered one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Athens, and was the home to Queen Frederika of Greece until the military coup d'etat of 1967. Several Greek private schools are located in Psychiko: Athens College, Moraitis School, Arsakeio, as well as the most historic public school, Varvakeio. Public municipal facilities include a very active cultural center (see external link), a 6-court tennis club, an indoor basketball/volleyball stadium with 3 ping-pong tables, an outdoor basketball and volleyball court and a rollerskating rink.

The name means literally an act of charity.

[citation needed]A popular legend about the battle of Marathon and the Marathon run was recorded by Andreas Karkavitsas in the 19th century and also Linos Politis. On the plain of Marathon there was once a big battle. Many Turks with many ships came to enslave the land and from there pass to Athens... The blood turned into a river, and reached from the roots of Vranas to Marathon on the other side. It reached the sea and painted the waves red. Lots of lamentation and evil took place. In the end the Greeks won... Then two men ran to bring the news to Athens. One of them went on horseback and the other on foot and in full gear. The rider went towards Halandri and the one on foot towards Stamata. Swift-footed he went up Aforesmos and down towards the village. As women saw him, they ran towards him: "Stop", they shouted, "stamata!" (Greek for stop). They wanted to ask what happened in the battle. He stopped a moment to catch his breath and then took the road again. Finally he reaches Psychiko. There he was almost near death , his feet were shaking, he felt like falling down. But he composed himself, took a deep breath, continued and finally reached Athens. "We won," he said, and immediately he fell down and died. The rider had yet to come. But there where the foot runner stopped and took a breath is named after his act. The first village is called Stamata and the second Psychiko.
