Pusey House was opened in 1884 in part as a memorial to Dr Edward Bouverie Pusey, Regius Professor of Hebrew at Oxford University, canon of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford, England, and for forty years a figurehead of the Oxford Movement, a movement of the 19th century which sought to bring the Church of England to a deeper understanding of its witness as part of the universal Catholic Church. It was also intended to continue the work of Dr Pusey in "restoring the Church of England's Catholic life and witness". The first Principal was Charles Gore.

The house contains Dr Pusey's library, and a large collection of theological and historical volumes. The clergy of the house are still called 'Priests-Librarian'. Services in the Catholic tradition of the Church of England are held there. The house is a place of study and a pastoral centre, catering mainly to adherents of the Catholic wing of the Church of England.

Pusey House is located in St Giles' in central Oxford. In 1981, the entire site of Pusey House, excluding the chapel, was granted to St Cross College on a 999 year lease. In 1993, the College added a new building, the South Wing.
