Pyrokinesis is the paranormal or legendary ability to control, ignite, and/or extinguish fire using only the mind. The word pyrokinesis comes from the Greek word for fire, "πυρ" (pir), and "κίνησις" (kínisis), movement, motion, a suffix that denotes movement.

Pyrokinesis is often explained as the ability to excite the atoms in an object with the mind to a level that they ignite and burn. For this to happen the object would need to be combustable and in an environment containing an oxidant, such as air which contains oxygen. A more complicated explanation would be the ability to create the fuel and oxidant, and provide the energy required for ignition.

Pyrokinesis is represented in many works of fiction, such as the Stephen King novel Firestarter and in the DC, Marvel, and other fictional comic book universes. Certain characters such as Marvel's Pyro possess only the ability to mentally control existing fires and cannot actually create them. It was shown on Avatar: The Last Airbender, where Combustion Man had pyrokinetic powers with which he could create fires and explosions
