Each Komen Race for the Cure is a five kilometer run/walk (5k) for people of all ages and fitness levels. All Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® courses are certified by USA Track and Field (USATF), the national governing body for track and field, long distance running, race walking and cross-country events.

Since its origination by Nancy Brinker, founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, in 1983, the Komen Race for the Cure Series has grown from one local Race in Dallas, Texas with 800 participants to a global series of nearly 120 Races with more than 1.5 million people expected to participate in 2007. The Race Series has grown internationally with events in Germany, Italy and Puerto Rico.

2008 will mark the 25th anniversary of the Komen Race for the Cure.

The National Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition Program celebrates breast cancer survivors. At each Race event, breast cancer survivors (both men and women) who choose to be recognized wear complimentary pink hats and t-shirts. Moreover, participants are encouraged to wear “In Memory of” and “In Celebration of” back signs, honoring loved ones for their strength and courage.

More than 92,000 people volunteer for the Race Series around the world each year. The Volunteer Recognition Program provides to all volunteers t-shirts, snacks, water and sunscreen and a “thank you” wall in the volunteer tent for participants to share their appreciation.

Seventy-five percent of the net income from each Race stays in the local community to fund local breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects. A minimum of 25 percent of the net income supports the Komen Award and Research Grant Program, which funds breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific conferences around the world. The Race Series also is committed to educating the public about early detection.
