Raheem DeVaughn was born in New Jersey and raised Maryland.
Raheem graduated from High Point High School in Beltsville, an unincorporated section of Prince George's County, Maryland, United States of America.
He had an epiphany early in his college career at Coppin State University, when he saw a group of street corner singers and began harmonizing with them.
Raheem says after this, his focus became music: Before I knew what was going on, I was... cutting class to write lyrics and record[1]. Raheem's focus turned to becoming a professional singer. Locally in the DC Metro area he attained relatively quick success, winning local awards and successfully releasing some independent work over the next few years. He won $2,000 from the Washington DC nightclub Bar Nun talent show. Raheem ultimately gained the attention of veteran producers DJ Jazzy Jeff (as Rahiem) and Kenny Burns (known as former A&R for Roc-A-Fella Records) and signed a recording contract with Jive Records in 2002.
DeVaughn's first solo single released on a major label was the song entitled "You". With its airy vocals and smooth sound, "Guess who loves you more" brought more attention to Raheem as well as his cultivated sense of creativity. DeVaughn's first Jive Records release, "The Love Experience", was acclaimed and boasted some of the soulful and exquisitely deep lyrics those labeled "neo-soul" are renowned for.
DeVaughn has been categorized amongst the likes of Dwele, Van Hunt, D'Angelo, Marvin Gaye, Donnie Hathaway and Stevie Wonder. His sound is so unique yet simple and while he does not boast the world's greatest singing voice, he knows how to use the voice he has and his arrangements are cognizant of an experienced gentleman who has lived in an era the precedes him.
Raheem DeVaughn occasionally releases music under the rap alias Cronkite.
His song "Woman" received a nomination for best Male R&B Vocal Performance for the 2008 Grammy Awards.
