Rarities 1971-2003 is a compilation album by The Rolling Stones that was released in 2005 worldwide by Virgin Records - as well as by the coffee-chain Starbucks in North America - and features a selection of supposedly rare and obscure material recorded between 1971 and 2003.
Consisting primarily of B-Sides and live recordings, Rarities 1971-2003 marks the first time these recordings have been made available on an official stand-alone release by The Rolling Stones, after years of demand.
Nevertheless, fans have had mixed feelings over the album, with many complaining many of these songs were already found in previous live/compilation albums. In addition, subtly changed remixes of less popular 1980s singles such as "Harlem Shuffle" and "Mixed Emotions" were also slotted in in the place of other more deserving material.
Several genuine, first-tier rarities (mostly B-sides) were included, such as "Fancyman Blues", "Anyway You Look At It", "Wish I'd Never Met You", "Through the Lonely Nights", and the band's live rendition of "Let It Rock" from 1971, but the rest of the album was considered to be padded out with questionable material that made Rarities 1971-2003 seem to many fans and critics like a missed opportunity, partially designed to please hardcore fans and partially a piece of product for the Starbucks market.
Heavily-bootlegged rarities such as "Blood Red Wine" and "Claudine" still remain in the vaults, along with quality outtakes from famous album sessions such as Beggars Banquet and entire live shows from the Stones early 1970s peak. Also missing are the B-sides from Voodoo Lounge and the song, "Cook Cook Blues" from Steel Wheels. In the liner notes, lead singer Mick Jagger acknowledges the band's discretion at re-releasing what they consider to be lesser songs, hence, a partial explanation for some of the songs in absence on Rarities 1971-2003. It should be noted that although the cover photo is evidently from the late 1970's, it only squeezes in the quartet lineup of the band and does not feature bassist Bill Wyman, who was probably cropped out of the shot.
Rarities 1971-2003 managed a #76 peak in the US.
