Raymond Emery (born September 28, 1982 in Cayuga, Ontario)[1] is an ice-hockey goaltender currently serving as the goaltender for the Ottawa Senators of the NHL.

Emery started his junior hockey career in 1998 in Junior C with the Dunnville Terriers of the OJHL. Despite recording only 3 wins in over 20 games, Emery was named the Rookie of the Year in 1998-99. In 1999, Emery was drafted by OHL's Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds in the 5th round of the OHL draft. Emery split the 1999-2000 season between the Welland Cougars of the OHA and the Greyhounds in the OHL. It was his first of the three seasons with the Greyhounds.

In 2001, after an 18 win, 29 loss season, Emery was drafted to the NHL by the Ottawa Senators. He was selected 99th overall. Emery had his most successful OHL season in 2001-2002. He won 33 of 59 games, and was named Goaltender of the Year in the OHL. He was also named Goaltender of the Year for the entire CHL.

In 2002-2003, Emery moved on to the Binghamton Senators of the AHL for his first season as a professional. He again had a solid season, winning 27 of 50 games. He was named to the AHL's All-Rookie team for 2003. He played two more full seasons in the AHL in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005. He also played in 6 NHL games with Ottawa.

Emery began his NHL career by setting a record for wins to start a career in the 2005-2006 season. Emery won his first nine games, moving ahead of Bob Froese, who started the 1982-83 season with eight wins while playing for the Philadelphia Flyers. In March of the same season, Emery won 12 games, tying legend Bernie Parent's record for the most wins in a month which Parent set in 1974.

Emery has a reputation as somewhat of a fighter. In 2000-2001 with the Greyhounds, Emery was involved in 4 on-ice fights. In his first season with Binghamton, Emery was suspended twice. He also had a rather ugly altercation with Denis Hamel of the Rochester Americans. Emery went after his future teammate after some racial slurs were said during a game.

Emery's fighting ways continued in 2003-2004. He was also suspended for 5 games for a stick swinging attack on Michel Ouellet of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

During the beginning of the 2005-2006 season, Emery was mainly used as back-up for Dominik Hašek. However, when Hasek injured his groin during the 2006 Winter Olympics, Emery became the starting goalie. Emery had irregular sequences, but maintained a record over .500 after the Olympics.

After the 2005-2006 season the Senators decided not to bring back Hašek, and instead bring in Martin Gerber to battle Emery for the number 1 goaltending job. Gerber won the starting job to start the season, but due to several costly easy goals, Emery regained the role of starter in mid-November.

On Saturday, February 10, 2007, Emery was suspended 3 games from the NHL for slashing Montreal Canadiens forward Maxim Lapierre after crashing into Emery's net. "I spoke with (NHL senior executive vice-president and director of hockey operations) Colin Campbell this morning and told him I realized I made a mistake and that it was not my intention to hurt anyone and I was glad that I didn’t,” Emery said.

On February 22, 2007, Emery was involved in the melee between the Senators and the Buffalo Sabres. He and Sabres goalie Martin Biron each left their creases and fought each other. After that was broken up, Emery then fought Sabres enforcer Andrew Peters. Both goaltenders received game misconducts, and Emery had the rare feat (for a goalie) of receiving two five-minute majors for fighting in the same incident. Emery received a total of 22 penalty minutes (two 5-minute majors for fighting, a 2-minute minor for leaving the crease, and the 10-minute game misconduct) for this altercation. After the altercation, fans and media have dubbed him "Sugar Ray" in reference to retired boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and Emery's reputation as a fighter.

In a winning 5-2 effort on March 30 he played his 100th NHL game, 32nd win of the year while teammate Dean McAmmond played in his 800th.

On January 30, 2006, Emery was the target of many critics as a result of a design which was painted on his goalie mask. Emery, who is an avid boxing fan, wore a mask with a picture of Mike Tyson painted on it (because he watched Tyson when he grew up).

The controversy came into question as a result of Tyson's reputation and past rape convictions. After speaking to Senators management, Emery decided not to wear the mask as both he and management felt it was inappropriate for hockey. He only wore the Tyson mask in a single game, a January 30, 2006 5-0 loss against the Boston Bruins[1].

During the 2006 NHL playoffs Emery wore a new mask featuring the legendary Canadian heavyweight boxer George Chuvalo.[2] Since then, some of his other masks have been painted with Marvin Hagler and Jack Johnson, among others. As of December 12, 2006, his mask still dons Chuvalo.
