This is about the Recess gang starting the fifth grade. They thought this would be the best year ever, but they would soon discover otherwise. First they got Ms. Finster as a teacher instead of Mrs. Milkie, who transferred. This was combined with their lockers being taken away, the substandard cafeteria food, and the removal of their playground.

TJ went to Principal Pickley. Principal Pickley said he couldn't do anything, because it was the school board's policy. In response, TJ protested to stay in his room, and never go to school again. TJ had to climb to the roof to get away from Mr. White, who was trying to stop him. TJ almost fell off the roof, but Prickly saved him. Prickly decided to join TJ's protest.

The board members found out that none of them liked the policy. There were just studies of things that the board members were too afraid to stand up to. Afterwards, things were great aside from having Ms. Finster as a teacher.

The gang are introduced to the fith and sixth graders club. At first TJ and the gang like it. But soon start getting annoyed of it. However Mickey and Gus still hang out with the other fith graders. TJ, Spinelli, Gretchin and Vince start getting sick of the jokes everyone makes about the younger students. So they get King Bob (There new King now is King Freddie)to get them into the club before everyone else arrives. But TJ and the gang bring 2 first graders, Tubby and Hector. Freddie Bans them from the Fith and Sixth graders club. But they are glad that everything is back to normal.
