The Recreation Ground is a multi-use stadium in Chesterfield, England. It is also known as Saltergate. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of Chesterfield F.C.. The stadium holds 8,504.
The four sides of the stadium are; The Main (or family) Stand, which is all-seated. The Spion Kop, which is the main terrace. The Compton Street stand, which has recently been fitted with seats in the covered area. And the Cross Street Terrace, which is an open terrace where the away fans usually stand.
It is generally regarded to be one of the oldest football league grounds still in use, having had its inauguration in 1871.
The record attendance is 30,986, which was set when Chesterfield played Newcastle Utd in 1949.
Despite a number of improvements over recent years, Saltergate remains an aged stadium lacking many of the modern facilities available to many of their rivals who have relocated or redeveloped their existing ground in recent years. In 2006, the club's fans voted to relocate from the Recreation Ground to a new 10,000 seater development elsewhere in the town.
