Jun Takeuchi, the director of Onimusha and producer of Lost Planet: Extreme Condition, will take over producer duties from Hiroyuki Kobayashi. Several staff members who also worked on the original Resident Evil are involved in development. According to Takeuchi, the game will utilize the same gameplay model introduced in Resident Evil 4, while implementing thematics from the original Resident Evil into the game.[citation needed] Although the game garnered much interest among Resident Evil fans, Capcom did not present any footage or information about Resident Evil 5 at E3 2006.[3]
Keiji Inafune, who served as promotional producer for Resident Evil 2 and executive producer for Resident Evil 4's PlayStation 2 version, is overseeing the project[4] In February of 2007, members of Capcom’s Clover Studio were also called upon to help develop the game. However, many developers from the studio have moved on to work on the upcoming Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, which will debut for the Wii.[5][6]
No details have been released about the game's storyline other than the fact that the setting will have a similar feel to the movie Black Hawk Down.[7] The main character shown in the early trailer has not been officially named so far. When an interviewer from the Weekly Famitsu asked about the character's resemblance to Chris Redfield, who was one of the series' original protagonists, Takeuchi simply commented that "the main character is someone that the developing team is very fond of".[8] He later added that the developing team is composed of staff members who worked on the first Resident Evil.[8] Despite the lack of information, Takeuchi has stated that Resident Evil 5 will be an actual sequel to the Resident Evil series, as opposed to Resident Evil 4, which was a side-story.[8]
- Just as the humanoid enemies in Resident Evil 4 were significantly faster than those in previous Resident Evil games, the Japanese teaser trailer for Resident Evil 5 shows enemies that are now even faster, running with comparable speeds to the rage-infected victims in the movie 28 Days Later, or the zombies in the remake of Dawn of the Dead.
- According to Play magazine, the enemies are shaping up to be a cross between a Ganado and a zombie. They communicate with each other like the Ganados in Resident Evil 4, but have a thirst for blood like the zombies in the classic Resident Evil games.[citation needed]
- Famitsu Xbox 360 has also said that according to the producers, the player's body temperature will play a large role. The player will have to find places to cool down in order to avoid the heat making it harder to shoot due to hallucinations and mirages appearing and the main character being unstable. Additionally, the same magazine suggests the presence of more interactive environments that are vital to the player's survival.[9]
- In an interview with Xbox360ism, Keiji Inafune briefly stated that the game will feature some online elements.[10]
