Richie Kavanagh

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Richie Kavanagh is an Irish entertainer, famous for chart-hits filled with suggestive innuendo. Kavanagh was born and raised in his early years in Garryhill, Fenagh, County Carlow. In his teens his mother was offered a job in the shirt and linen industry in Derry, and so the family moved to a small area of farmland in the town of Eglinton just outside the city. During these years, Kavanagh attended St. Columb's College in the city. He did not finish a full seven years, however, as the local linen industry began to flounder and the family returned to their roots in Carlow in search of work. It was then that Richie, inspired by the traveling showbands of the 1950s, began to play gigs in local venues around the countryside to raise some money. His ability to entertain grew from there.

Kavanagh has been the star attraction at summer festivals all over the country. To date, he has released nine albums, while his single successes include Pussy Pussy Cat, Scratch me Back and My Girlfriend's got a Mobile Phone. Aon Focal Eile (One More Word) was in the top ten in the charts for over six months and eight weeks as number one, and won Richie an IRMA award for Best Single of the Year in Ireland for 1996. A song about learning Irish in school, it plays on the resemblance of focal (Irish for "word") to the English expression fuck all. He also had hits with such obscene / "hilarious" tracks as "Dick on her Mind" and "The Chicken Song". In December 2006, he won the fictional Ballydung Idol contest on The Podge and Rodge Show, with "The Podge and Rodge" song.
