William Roberts (born February 8, 1977 in Carol City, Florida) better known by his stage name Rick Ross (alternate form Rick Ro$$ ), is a rapper from Carol City in northern Miami-Dade County, Florida of Haitian descent.[1] Ross' moniker is borrowed from drug trafficker Ricky "Freeway" Ross, who ran one of the largest cocaine distribution networks in the country during the 1980s and early '90s. He signed with Slip-N-Slide, which as of 2007, is distributed under Def Jam Records. Port of Miami, Ross' debut album, was released on August 8, 2006, with the lead single "Hustlin'" peaking at #9 on the hip-hop chart and #54 on the Billboard Hot 100. A remix of the single featuring Young Jeezy, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne & Busta Rhymes also achieved some popularity in digital downloads. [2] Port of Miami went on to be certified Platinum selling over 1,000,000 copies.[3]
In 2006 Rick Ross established Rick Ross Charities Inc. which offers educational, social and mentoring programs.[4]

Rick Ross grew up in Miami's Carol City section, a notoriously dangerous inner-city neighborhood. As a young child his father had abandoned him and his mother became the sole provider of the family. As an adolescent he spent much of his time hanging out and playing football in the street or listening to rap music which became influential in his life as he moved onto middle school. It was in Miami Carol City High School where he would begin to experiment with rap music, however his prowess in football would take hold. Upon graduating in 1995 Ross was awarded a scholarship to Louisiana State University, where he enrolled. He soon dropped out, however, and upon returning to Carol City Ross began to pursue his music career. He is married to Laura Haslam. [5]
