Rising is a heavy metal album by Rainbow, released in 1976 (see 1976 in music). With founder Ritchie Blackmore retaining only Ronnie James Dio from the previous album, Rising has become known as the best album of Rainbow's career. Rising is characterized by its heavy guitar riffs and the keyboard skills of Tony Carey, together with the powerful drumming of Cozy Powell. Recorded in Munich in less than a month, the album has surprisingly few overdubs and was overseen by famous Deep Purple engineer and rock producer Martin Birch.

The 8 minute and 26 second piece "Stargazer" is renowned for Blackmore's mesmeric guitar playing ably matched with the powerful vocals of Ronnie James Dio and thunderous drumming of Cozy Powell. Its use of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra to strengthen and enrich the riffs played by the guitar, bass and keyboards (essentially, the orchestra was doubling with the keyboards) was an idea that led to the album's establishment as one of Rainbow's best albums, if not the best. The album directly inspired the neo-classical heavy rock genre personified by Yngwie Malmsteen.

However, surprisingly little of the album made it into the live set: 'Stargazer' and 'Do You Close Your Eyes' featured in all the 1976 shows, while 'Light in the Black' was dropped early in the tour. A reason was that back-to-back lengthy song live performances with its intricate virtuouso guitar performances from Blackmore tired out the supporting musicians.

Rising peaked at #48 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart. In the UK it would peak at #6.

The original vinyl release was a gatefold sleeve, with a generic Polydor inner-bag.

The first CD issue had a slightly different mix to that of the original LP, including, for example, a longer delay before the band entered after Carey's opening solo in 'Tarot Woman' and a longer play-out on 'Run With The Wolf'. When remastered in 1999 the original vinyl mix was restored.

There is an ROIO with the 'Rough Mix', taken from the late Cozy Powell's own tape. Most notably, this includes a keyboard introduction to 'Stargazer', similar to that which Carey would play live. The mix itself is little different.
