Robert Barone

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Robert Charles Barone is a fictional character from the American TV sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond. He is played by actor Brad Garrett. Though Robert is four years older than Ray, he constantly feels as if he's stuck in Ray's shadow, and lets his feelings be known. (Unfortunately, nobody ever listens.) However, he's a kind and loving brother just as equally as Raymond, and will support him when need be. One particular episode had Robert and Raymond at odds with each over over a trivial issue. But when a sports personality insults Raymond to his face, an infuriated Robert springs into action and defends his brother by humiliating the man. He feels neglected by his parents, especially his mother, and is constantly negative and pessimistic. A recurring theme is that his mother Marie greatly favors Raymond over him, although she deeply loves her son and even went so far as to interfering with an interview Robert had with the F.B.I., fearing for his safety. His main source of love, affection, support and encouragement is his long time girlfriend - and later wife - Amy (Monica Horan).

Robert is a police officer.

Robert also serves as the moral conscience in the family. He is the most virtuous of the characters, and pleads with others when they are considering doing something questionable. But, as previously mentioned, he is usually never taken seriously.

Robert's height, appearance and demeanor are the source of much humor. In the show's pilot, the character consistently elicited laughter from the audience simply by entering or leaving a scene. Despite his huge size, Robert is a very skilled dancer.

Robert's first marriage, with a bitchy stripper called Joanne, was a failure that robbed him of his freedom and his self-esteem. When Joanne humiliated Robert by dumping him in coldblooded fashion, an infuriated Marie took action and threw Joanne out of the couple's house. After his divorce, Robert went to live with his parents for several years, which only added to his bad mood. He later had to live at his parent's house again to recuperate after being gored in the "upper thigh area" by a bull while breaking up an illegal rodeo. Debra introduced him to her best friend Amy MacDougal, who was still a virgin when she met Robert. They broke up several times before finally getting married. Following that, they were inseparable.

In one episode, it is implied that Robert tried to injure Raymond when they were kids. In that episode, Robert told Ray that he had sabotaged his bike, causing Ray to crash while he was riding, causing him to break his arm. When Ray found this out, he asked Robert if certain bad things that happened to him (Ray) during their childhood was his fault, or Robert's. The conversation included: Ray:"The time I almost drowned?" Robert:"Lake or Ocean?" Ray:(pause)"Lake." Robert:"You"

  • Robert had a pet bulldog named Shamsky.
  • Robert's first wife (before Amy) was an erotic dancer.
  • Robert has a foot odor problem.
  • Robert has a Spastic Colon (aka Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
  • Robert had a slight bed wetting problem when he was young (which turned out to be Ray splashing water on him so Marie would come into the bedroom and settle Ray's fears caused by Frank's scary bedtime stories).
  • Robert sleeps naked.
  • Robert was once so jealous over Amy dating someone else, he pulled off Ray's doorknob.
  • Robert once dated a woman who thought "we (all people) come from frogs."
  • Robert has a nervous habit of touching food to his chin before eating it. He has other compulsive habits such as making all the dollars in his wallet face the same direction so the presidents don't "kiss" each other and facing his toothbrush to the east.
  • Robert is a fan of The Twilight Zone.
  • Off-show, Brad Garrett jokingly expresses a similar rivalry with Ray Romano as their Everyone Loves Raymond characters. In an episode of Celebrity Poker, he yells at Ray about living under his shadow for 8~ years.
