Rolos are a brand of cylindrical chocolates, with caramel centers, made by Nestle, and produced under licence (from Rowntree Mackintosh) by The Hershey Company in the United States since 1969. They were advertised for many years with the slogan: Do you love anyone enough to give them your last Rolo? They have been distributed all over the world, and even have their own animated character, Rolo Mot.
In the UK, they are made at Fawdon in Tyneside by Nestle Rowntree. They were first made originally in 1938 by Rowntrees in York. Mackintosh toffee was coated with chocolate. There have now been Rolo cookies, ice-cream, muffins, birthday cake, desserts, cake bars, mini Rolos, big Rolos, (which all use exactly the same type of caramel) yogurts and Easter eggs made. There is a white chocolate version with Irish cream.
It is also possible to buy a solid silver Rolo as a romantic gift.
In the episode entitled "Friends" of Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, Tim and Eric attempt to write a jingle for Rolos. They create a hip-hop style jingle, and a rock version of the jingle plays during the episode's end credits.
In 2007, Phil Kollin entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the ninth time, by eating the largest amount of Rolos in under 10 minutes. The total count was 232 Rolos or the equivalent of 21 packages in 9 minutes and 57 seconds. The record is disputed by former record holder Eva Hager, a competitive eater.[citation needed]
