Romuva (temple)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Romuva or Romowe was a pagan worship place (a temple or just a sacred area) at pre-Christian times (mainly before the beginning of the 15th century) in Lithuania and Prussia.
According to some early accounts, Romuva allegedly was the name of the center of Baltic paganism. However, the accounts are considered by some historians to be a misinterpretation based on the fact that Romuva sounded similar to Rome; the early chroniclers, not knowing any religion other than Christianity, may have expected Baltic Paganism to be similar in having a single center and a single leader, which was possibly not the case.
There have been many places in Prussia under the name Romuva or similar, the biggest of them is now Pravdinsk.
