Rory Delap (born 6 July 1976 in Sutton Coldfield) is a professional footballer who was currently plays for Stoke City. Previously, he was signed for Sunderland by ex manager Mick McCarthy on a free transfer, before being becoming a marginal figure in new manager Roy Keane's squad.
Prior to playing for Sunderland, Delap was Southampton's most expensive transfer, moving to the club for £4m from Derby County. He began his career at Carlisle United before joining Derby for £200,000. The utility player has been capped 11 times for the Republic of Ireland.
Delap made 6 appearances for Sunderland in the 05-06 season before injury struck. In October 2006 he joined Stoke City on loan. Delap suffered a horrific injury on his home debut for Stoke City against his former club Sunderland, breaking his leg in two places while challenging for the ball. Although being on loan at the club, Stoke signed Delap on a permanent basis despite the fact that his injury could sideline him for the remainder of the season[1]. Stoke have been praised for their decision to stand by their injured player.
