Rothschild
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Rothschild (variant: Rothchild) is a German surname. It is a habitational name from a house distinguished with a red sign (Middle High German rot = "red" + schild = "sign", "shield"), the earliest recorded example dating from the 13th century.
The proper German pronunciation can be rendered in English as "Rote-shilt" or in the IPA as [ˈroːt.ˌʃɪlt]. Note that the "s" in the middle belongs to the second syllable, not the first. In English the surname is normally pronounced "Roth-child" (IPA: /ˈrɒθtʃaɪld/) or "Roth's-child" (/ˈrɒθstʃaɪld/).
