Royal Oak Charter Township is a charter township in Oakland County of the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. As of the 2000 census, the population was 5,446. The nearby city of Royal Oak is legally separate from the township.

Until 2004, the township consisted of two small non-contiguous parcels of land within Oakland County. The larger portion was along 8 Mile Road, adjacent to Detroit, Oak Park, and Ferndale. A second portion, located northwest of the other portion, adjoining Oak Park and Southfield, was annexed by Oak Park on November 1, 2004.

As of the as of the July 1, 2006 Census Bureau estimate, which took into account the 2004 annexation, the township had a population of 2,736.

According to the United States Census Bureau, as of 2000, the township has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km²), all land. This has since been corrected by the Census, taking into account the 2002 annexation. As of 2003, the township has a total area of 0.56 sq mi, all land.

At one time, Royal Oak Township consisted of all or parts of the following cities: Hazel Park, Ferndale, Oak Park, Southfield, Madison Heights, Troy, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Berkley, and Clawson.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 5,446 people, 2,511 households, and 1,293 families residing in the township. The population density was 8,055.8 people per square mile (3,092.2/km²). There were 2,595 housing units at an average density of 3,838.6 per square mile (1,473.4/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 22.73% White, 71.50% African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 3.34% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.16% of the population.

There were 2,511 households out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 21.1% were married couples living together, 26.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 48.5% were non-families. 44.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.15 and the average family size was 3.02.

In the township the population was spread out with 25.0% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 18.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 78.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 72.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $23,710, and the median income for a family was $28,397. Males had a median income of $28,824 versus $26,382 for females. The per capita income for the township was $15,027. About 19.9% of families and 23.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.8% of those under age 18 and 30.4% of those age 65 or over.
