Sagesund

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sagesund is a small village in the municipality of Tvedestrand, located in the middle of Oksefjorden. Approx. 50 people are living there on a permanent basis. It is very popular in the summer, when the population is at least doubled. The place has a marina for recreational boats, a sports arena with tennis courts, and a beach volleyball field. The fjord is also an excellent place for waterskiing and wakeboarding, but also for more quiet activities. It is specially suitable for walks in the woods with idyllic ponds.

Sagesund is located 6.2 km from Tvedestrand on County road 411, and there is a bus service from Tvedestrand.

Sagesund got its name from a sash saw mill (oppgangssag), located in a creek. The lumbermill was used by local farmers. In the 19th century there were three shipyards here, building sailing ships, brigs, barks, schooners etc. There used to be a big ice storage building used when ice was exported. In the 1950s there were three stores, a post office, a galvanic workshop, a house for assemblies and an electric sawmill.

The sailboat Origo started and ended its circumnavigation of the world from Sagesund in 1994. Nor Siglar, with half the crew from Sagesund, also included Sagesund as a natural stop on its way around the globe.
