The city was built in the basin in the eastern banks of the Cher which separated from the commune of Orval which is connected by two bridges. The site rises from Bourges and the Champagne Berrichonne area in the north, and Montluçon after canal de Berry which cross the commune from southeast to southwest. Water levels are common because of the marshes. The city is the capital of Boischaut, the land of mixed wood and pasture along with breeding. It is agricultural in the north in the area of Boischaut with (bovines) and Champagne Berrichonne in the south with cereal crops.
The settlement of Saint-Amand goes back to prehistoric times. Three cities were divided during the Middle Ages, Saint Armand le Chastel, Montrond and Saint Armand sous Montrond.
