Saint-Charles River

The Saint-Charles River is a river in Quebec, Canada that empties into the north bank of the Saint Lawrence River in the Vieux-Port section of Quebec City. The river drains an area of 520 km². It flows 33 km south from its source in Lake Saint-Charles.
In 1535, Jacques Cartier anchored his ships in the estuary of the Saint-Charles and set up camp near the Iroquoian village of Stadacona. Cartier called it the Sainte-Croix River. The Cartier-Brébeuf National Historic Site is located on the river at Quebec City. Ship-building facilities were located along the river in the 19th and early 20th century.
