Salimuzzaman Siddiqui

Prof. Dr. Salimuzzaman Siddiqui (1897-1994) was a leading Pakistani scientist in natural products chemistry, an eminent literary personality, a painter, and a great connoisseur of music.

Salimuzzan was born in a literary family of Lucknow on October 19, 1897. Received his early education from Lucknow, Graduated from M.A.O College Aligarh University in 1919 and in 1927 received Doctor of Philosophy D.Phil. Nat, for his work in Germany. He, right from his early schooling, was keenly involved in drawing, painting and sculpture, to the extent that after barely completing his matriculation he joined the Calcutta School of Arts, and was a pupil of Rabindranath Tagore, the founder of the famous Bengal School of painting.

After the emergence of Pakistan in 1947, he was entrusted by the government of Pakistan in 1951 with the organization of the Pakistan Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, and continued as its director and chairman until 1966. Since then he had been involved in establishing the H.E.J Research Institute of Chemistry at the Karachi University, which has acquired international stature as a center of research in the chemistry and natural products.
