The Rampage's history goes back as far as 2000 when the ground was broken for the SBC Center (renamed the AT&T Center in 2006) right next door to the Freeman Coliseum, which at the time served as home ice for the Central Hockey League's San Antonio Iguanas, the team which had initially brought professional hockey to San Antonio and single-handedly established a fan base for the sport.

The AT&T Center was built primarily for the Spurs who had grown unhappy with the Alamodome. The Spurs were granted a sweatheart deal by Bexar County which provided the Spurs not only a new home in the AT&T Center but also granted the "Booking Rights" to the NBA Spurs. The deal gave the Spurs full control over their NBA schedule plus control over the schedule of all other events, including hockey. With the Spurs reserving the best dates for their NBA games and offering the Iguanas a disproportionate amount of undesirable and generally unprofitable weekday game dates, the Spurs used the "Booking Rights" leverage to undermine the economic feasibility of the Iguanas hockey franchise and initiated a hostile buy-out of the Iguanas making a below-market-value offer for the franchise. The Iguanas' ownership refused to sell under such adverse conditions and chose to suspend operations while retaining ownership of the "Iguanas" team name -- a revered and valuable commodity.

The Spurs were successful in driving the Iguanas out of operation but in the process they had alienated the pro hockey fan base loyal to the Iguanas. The Spurs were then forced to look elsewhere for a hockey franchise.

Originally partnering up with the Florida Panthers, the Spurs brought the AHL to San Antonio. The team was initially unveiled as the "Stampede" with the current logo sporting "STAMPEDE" in place of "RAMPAGE". But the Spurs failed to adequately research the "Stampede" name and were soon notified that the name was already owned by another party. That mistep required the Spurs to rename their hockey team "Rampage".

On June 30, 2005, the Rampage switched its affiliation from the Florida Panthers to the Phoenix Coyotes after the Coyotes bought the team from the Panthers. The team unveiled a new look to celebrate their fifth season in San Antonio.

Though never matching the fervent fan support once enjoyed by the Iguanas, the Rampage's future is assured due to the promotional and financial backing of the San Antonio Spurs.

The market was previously served by:
