Santa Cruz County is located in the south of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 38,381. The county seat is Nogales.

Santa Cruz County contains Tumacácori National Historical Park.

Santa Cruz County, created in 1899 , is named after the Santa Cruz River which was named in the late 1600s by Father Kino. Santa Cruz means "holy cross" in Spanish. After that Father Kino built the famous misson which still stands today at the Tumacacori National Historic Park.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,207 km² (1,238 sq mi). 3,205 km² (1,238 sq mi) of it is land and 1 km² (0 sq mi) of it (0.04%) is water. Although Santa Cruz County is the smallest county in the State of Arizona, it is still larger in area than the national average of 1,611 km² (622 sq. miles) (See County (United States).)

As of the census² of 2000, there were 38,381 people, 11,809 households, and 9,506 families residing in the county. The population density was 12/km² (31/sq mi). There were 13,036 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/sq mi). The racial makeup of the county was 76.00% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 19.73% from other races, and 2.63% from two or more races. 80.78% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 79.71% of the population reported speaking Spanish at home, while 19.51% speak English [1].

There were 11,809 households out of which 45.60% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.30% were married couples living together, 15.40% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.50% were non-families. 16.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.10% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.23 and the average family size was 3.66.

In the county the population was spread out with 33.60% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 26.60% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 10.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 91.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $29,710, and the median income for a family was $32,057. Males had a median income of $27,972 versus $21,107 for females. The per capita income for the county was $13,278. About 21.40% of families and 24.50% of the population were below the poverty line, including 29.70% of those under age 18 and 23.20% of those age 65 or over.
