Sarekat Islam

Sarekat Islam, formerly Sarekat Dagang Islam, is an Indonesian organization.
Sarekat Dagang Islam, a Javanese batik traders's cooperative, was founded by H. Samanhudi, a businessman in Surakarta, in 1912. His business was trading in batik, the traditional cloth made in Java. Sarekat Dagang Islam, or Union of Islamic Traders, had as its goal the empowerment of local businesspeople, especially in the batik industry.
As Sarekat Dagang Islam got bigger and had to manage more issues, it was reorganized to become Sarekat Islam. Sarekat Islam's general office was in Surabaya. There was a famous leader of Sarekat Islam: H.O.S. Cokroaminoto. H.O.S. Cokroaminoto had 3 famous students that in next period, they coloured Indonesian politics. The students were: Soekarno the nationalist, Semaun the socialist, and Kartosuwiryo the religious.
