Sault College

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sault College is one of 24 publicly funded community colleges in Ontario. Sault College is located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario and began in 1965 as the Ontario Vocational Centre. Today, Sault College offers full-time and part-time opportunities for students in post-secondary, apprenticeship, adult retraining, continuing education, and contract training program categories. Sault College's full-time and part-time enrollment totals about 9,000 registrants annually. After completing post-secondary studies, Sault College graduates start their careers or, in many cases, move into related university degree studies with advanced standing.

A popular University choice is Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. Many students further their studies at Lake State and finish their studies with both diplomas and degrees.

In the fall of 1965, the institution opened its doors as the Sault Ste. Marie Ontario Vocational Centre, or OVC. Similar "training schools" began in London and Ottawa. The OVCs evolved into Ontario's community colleges. In 1967 the Ontario government established a system of Colleges of Applied Arts & Technology, more often known as community colleges.

Sault Ste. Marie's OVC became the Sault Campus of the newly established Cambrian College of Applied Arts & Technology. Its main campus was located in Sudbury. A second satellite campus opened in North Bay. Community colleges enjoyed immediate public acceptance and support. In fact, Cambrian's enrollment growth was so rapid that within only five years the satellites became independent colleges. The independent Sault College of Applied Arts & Technology emerged in 1973. Cambrian's second satellite campus - in North Bay - became Canadore College of Applied Arts & Technology.

Sault College has grown tremendously over the years, adding programs in all disciplines. They now respond to the postsecondary educational needs of more than 9,000 part-time and full-time students each year. Some of the more popular programs include: Police Foundations, Aviation, Liberal Studies, Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BsCN), Fish and Wildlife and Social Services Worker.
