Scott Chipperfield

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Scott Chipperfield (born December 30, 1975 in Sydney, New South Wales) is an Australian football (soccer) fullback, who currently plays for FC Basel in the Swiss Super League wearing the number 11 shirt. His nickname is "Chippa".

He is a regular member of the Australian national team and previously played for the Wollongong Wolves in Australia, at which time he also worked as a bus driver. He joined Basel from Wollongong in 2001 having had an unsuccessful trial with English side Bolton Wanderers the previous Winter.

He is perhaps best known in Australia for his loyal and somewhat unexpected appearance at the 2002 Oceania Nations Cup in New Zealand, a tournament which was marred by the financial turmoil of the then Soccer Australia. The non-existent financial contribution meant that the Australian players had to pay their own way to get to New Zealand. Chipperfield became the only one of Australia's large European contingent to answer the call and perform for his country in their time of need.

Chipperfield was selected to represent Australia at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, and was part of the team that successfully defeated Uruguay in a playoff in November 2005 to qualify for Germany.

At the 2006 FIFA World Cup he played an integral role in the Australian midfield and defence, and was considered one of Australia's best players at the tournament. Soon afterwards he was subject to a bid by Charlton Athletic but in July 2006 FC Basel announced he had signed a three-year contract extension, keeping him at the club until June 2009.

He has said that he would be willing to return to Wollongong to play in the future, should a bid to gain a Wollongong team in the A-League be successful.[1]
