Scum Punk is a subgenre of punk with loose ties to the hardcore and punkabilly subgenres which is identified by lyrics focusing on bizarre sexual acts, bodily functions and drug use. Many scum punk bands perform said activities on stage, such as urinating and or defacating on the audience, using I.V. drugs, having audience members fellate band members, and performing their act in the nude. Most of these acts are carried out off-stage as well.

Though scum punk has a unique sound compared with other punk subgenres, it has large philosophical ties as well. Diametrically opposed to the straight edge movement, scum punk tries to mix a "hard living" philosophy with equally hard sounding punk music. Scum punks usually exhibit a general disregard for hygiene, morality, or respect for anything at all, including themselves. Many followers or artists of the genre write songs about or engage in many generally "taboo" acts including incest, rape, pedophilia, self-harm, bestiality, homosexuality, theft, drug use, and anti-social behaviour. Unlike most people, followers of scum punk take pride in acts such as these and are often amoral. Such persons have a nihilistic "Live fast, die young" philosophy and take little initiative in ensuring their personal well being. They generally live life one day at a time with little, if any, plans for the future.
