IMDb profile

September is a 1987 film written and directed by Woody Allen. With its small cast (six people) and a single location it is considered a chamber piece. Allen's intention of September was to be like "a play on film," thus the great number of long shots and few camera effects.

The movie does not feature Allen as an actor, and is one of his straightforward dramatic films. The cast includes Mia Farrow, Sam Waterston, Dianne Wiest, Elaine Stritch, Jack Warden, and Denholm Elliott.

The plot centers around Lane, who is recovering in her house in the country. She has been befriended by local widower Howard. Peter is renting her guest house. Her friend Stephanie is spending the month with her. And her mother, Diane, and step-father come to visit. It is a story of unrequited love, betrayal, selfishness, and loneliness.

Woody shot the film twice. Originally with Sam Shepard as Peter (after Christopher Walken shot a few scenes, but was determined not to be right for the role), Maureen O'Sullivan as Diane, and Charles Durning as Howard. After editing the film he decided to re-write it, re-cast it, and re-shoot it.
