Hellfire Sermons

Hellfire Sermons, independent band from Liverpool, England.

Contents

The band formed in 1987 out of two other local bands, Decemberists (not to confused with the current Decemberists from Oregon, USA) and Jenny Lind, and released a string of 7-inch singles to critical acclaim, quickly selling out of their short-run pressings. They derive their name from a James Joyce story.

The first single "Freakstorm" was given a rave write-up by Bob Stanley of Saint Etienne fame in the NME comparing the band to Hurrah and fellow Liverpudlians Shack. This early jangly sound of the band has led to them being bracketed with the C86 sound current at that time. Three of the band's records were produced by Ken Nelson, later the producer on the Coldplay album 'Parachutes'. The Hellfire Sermons' third single, 'Covered In Love' was Single of the Week in Melody Maker. In 2002 the Hellfire Sermons recordings were collected together onto the CD 'Hymns Ancient and Modern' by the US independent Bus Stop Label. The band continue writing and rehearsing in Liverpool, UK.
