Setsuna Meioh (冥王せつな Meiō Setsuna?) or Trista in the English anime is one of the central characters in the Sailor Moon metaseries. She is best known by the name Sailor Pluto, one of the series' primary heroines — the Sailor Senshi.
Sailor Pluto is included among the major planetary Senshi because, until August 2006, Pluto was considered the ninth planet in the solar system.

Profile
Sailor Pluto is not introduced until late in the Sailor Moon R series. She is the Senshi at the gates of time, who Chibiusa contacts through her Luna-P. Sailor Pluto was very fond of Chibiusa, and referred to her by her "princess name," "Small Lady." Chibiusa usually calls Sailor Pluto by the nickname "Puu" (subtitled as "Plu").
After the events of the second story arc, she leaves the gates of time to temporarily live as a human being, joins the rest of the Outer Senshi, and becomes a scientist. Even in her civilian form, Setsuna is the oldest of the Sailor Team, around her late teens or older. Her personality has been described as cold, impersonal, and somewhat lonely, however she does consistently display warmth and affection for Chibiusa.[2] When she reincarnates, she becomes a bit less cold, but is still not very emotional. She later cares for Hotaru along with Michiru and Haruka.
Sailor Pluto's precise abilities and knowledge of the past and present are only vaguely defined, although a common theory is a form of omniscience, possibly due to her portrayal in the anime. For example, she was presumably aware of the two sailor soldiers carrying the mystical objects they were hunting for, but did not inform them and allowed various people to be attacked. (Note: This differs greatly from the manga, and may be a simple continuity error rather than bad writing.) This omniscience is represented as being able to watch through the gates of time, and such.
Sailor Pluto appears in just a few TV episodes, and observations show that she really has only one true attack, "Dead Scream"; unlike the other Senshi's attack phases, "Dead Scream" is whispered rather than shouted (in the English dub it is known as "Pluto Deadly Scream", and it is yelled out like the others). Like all the Senshi of the Outer Edge of the Solar System, Sailor Pluto wields a weapon, a long key-shaped staff with a garnet jewel at its top, called her Garnet Rod, through which she focuses her power. The jewel that rests on top of the Garnet Rod, the Garnet Orb, is the third mystic talisman that forms the Holy Grail. Pluto's staff helps her control time as well as activate her attack, and is the key to the gates of time (along with the set she carries around her waist); the Garnet Rod always protects those with good hearts.
Unlike Neptune and Uranus, Sailor Pluto is sympathetic toward the Inner Senshi, and assists them on several occasions. During the second story arc, she allows them to travel through time even though this is not ordinarily allowed.[3] In the third story arc, she often extends help or advise to Sailor Moon and her companions even when Sailors Uranus and Neptune want the two groups separate.[4] Later, Setsuna joins the Inner Senshi in investigating the true identity of Chibichibi.[5]
Another power that Sailor Pluto possesses is the ability to stop time, though it has been forbidden due to its potential for negative consequences. However, like the other rules set upon her position (never to leave the time gate and never use it to transport others), it was broken. While Sailor Neptune and Sailor Uranus are in the front compartment of a helicopter going to the "Mugen Gakuen" establishment, the daimons that have surrounded the school attack the helicopter, immobilizing its rotors. As the helicopter was almost about to explode, Sailor Pluto used her time stopping power to save the other passengers. While Neptune and Uranus were safely teleported onto the building, Pluto was thrown into a dimensional rift, and did not re-emerge until much later (skipping an entire season in the anime version). It is uncertain if she wound up in the rift due to the nature of the power or as a punishment for using it.
The statistics listed for Setsuna in the manga are unusual in that most of them never come up in the series—for instance, her favorite subject is given as physics, and her least favorite as music. She is said to enjoy shopping, the color dark red, and green tea, while disliking eggplant and cockroaches. She is especially good at sewing, and even dreams of becoming a designer. Her blood type is A,[1] and her height varies between 172 centimeters (5 ft 8 in) and 178 centimeters (5 ft 10 in) tall, depending on her incarnation.[6][7]
The kanji of Setsuna's surname translate as "dark" (冥 mei?) and "king" (王 ō?). Together, they constitute most of the name of the planet Pluto in Japanese, Meiōsei. Her given name is in hiragana (せつな setsuna?) and so its meaning is not inherent, but the word itself means "moment". It can also be taken as a derivative of setsunai, meaning "painful"; according to the dubbed anime's executive producer, Janice Sonski, the choice of her English name, "Trista", was based on this interpretation. Trista derives from the Latin triste, meaning sadness. An early dub by DiC may have rendered her name as Susanna.[citation needed] The packaging of Irwin dolls released in Canada in 1998 called Setsuna by the name Celia.
Aspects and forms
As a character with different incarnations, special powers, transformations and a long lifetime virtually spanned between the Silver Millennium era and the 30th century, Setsuna gains multiple aspects and aliases as the series progresses.
Sailor Pluto
Setsuna's primary identity is that of a Senshi. Her uniform is colored in black and dark red, and in its first iteration has no sleeves; her appearance (including height and exact hairstyle) changes somewhat throughout the series because, due to time travel, different "versions" of her are present at different times. She is given specific titles throughout the various series, including Soldier of Change,[8] Soldier of Revolution and, most commonly, Guardian of Time. Her personality is not noticeably different when she is a civilian, although certain powers seem to be unavailable to her in that form.
Sailor Pluto has power over both time and space,[9] and is ordinarily stationed at the Space-Time Door (a time-travelling gate) to prevent its use. Her powers are somewhat tied with those of Sailor Saturn for astrological and mythological reasons.[10] She wields the Garnet Rod,a key-shaped staff which is topped by the Garnet Orb, one of three talismans carried by the Outer Senshi. In the manga, she sometimes wears a chain of keys around her waist.
As she grows stronger, Sailor Pluto gains additional powers, and at key points her uniform changes to reflect this. The first change takes place in Act 39 of the manga, when she obtains the Pluto Crystal and her outfit becomes similar to that of Super Sailor Moon. She is not given a new title. A similar event takes place in Episode 167 of the anime, and she is given the name Super Sailor Pluto. A third, manga-only form appears in Act 42, also unnamed but analogous to Eternal Sailor Moon (sans wings).[11]
Princess Pluto
During the Silver Millennium, Sailor Pluto was also the Princess of her home world. She was among those given the duty of protecting the solar system from outside invasion. As Princess Pluto, she dwelt in Charon Castle and wore a black gown--she appears in this form in the original manga Act 41, as well as in supplementary art.

Transformations
(Note: In the English dub, she transforms without saying "Make-up" at the end.)
- Pluto Planet Power, Make-Up! - Used to transform into Sailor Pluto and, in the anime, Super Sailor Pluto. In the English dub, except for the S movie, this is known as Pluto Star Power.
- Pluto Crystal Power, Make-Up! - (Manga only) Used to transform into Sailor Pluto's two more powerful forms.
Pluto's transformation begins with her holding her transformation device aloft as she calls out her transformation phrase. She spins, creating a sand-like circle that rises up and washes over her, leaving her in her uniform. She runs her arm through her hair as her jewelry appears on her. She is then given lipstick and she poses.
Attacks
- Jikan yo Tomare (Time Stop) - Sailor Pluto stops time. This ability is forbidden and Sailor Pluto can only use it at the sacrifice of her life.
- Dead Scream - Intense wind circles the Garnet Orb as she holds her staff at her side and whispers "Dead Scream." This causes the Garnet Orb to absorb the winds and transform them into a charge of bright purple energy. She spins and takes aim with the staff as a ring of energy encircles the energy sphere at the end of her staff before it fires at her enemy. In the English anime, this attack is called Pluto Deadly Scream and is shouted.
- Chronos Typhoon - Sailor Pluto sends a gust of wind from her staff. This attack is used in Act 31, Volume 09 as well as the Sailormoon fighting games for Super Famicom, Sony Playstation, and Sega Saturn.
- Garnet Ball - Sailor Pluto uses her Garnet Orb to create a barrier around her general area. This attack is used in Act 32, Volume 09.
- Dark Dome Close - In the manga, Sailor Pluto uses this magic spell to forever close the Door of Space-Time after Sailor Saturn uses her "Death Reborn Revolution" ability.
- Galactica Cannon - Used in conjunction with Sailor Saturn when they are controlled by Sailor Galaxia.
Variations
Sailor Pluto has additional, less cited influences and spheres of dominion in her manga incarnation, influences that are vaguely suggested in the anime, but never made explicit. Sailor Pluto is much darker in her initial form in the manga, identified as the "Guardian of the Underworld" with very dark skin and a black sailor uniform. She is a ruthless soldier who follows rather exacting laws, executing any intruders who dare violate the underworld in search for the Gates of Time. She even goes so far as to nearly kill Sailor Moon herself in the Black Moon Saga, stating that the series' heroine has "violated the law" and must be "eliminated". Had not Chibiusa come to defend her, Pluto more than likely would have terminated Sailor Moon. Luna also states to the others than no one is to even know that she (Pluto) exists, due to her dominion and nature.[13] The anime plays up Setsuna's obvious loneliness as a result of her position by having Sailor Moon feel pity for her in internal monologue.
When Pluto first introduces herself in the Infinity Saga in the manga, and in her initial episodes in the Super Series in the anime, Pluto claims she is from the "Star of the Underworld" (meikai no hoshi). Her attack "Dead Scream" has nothing to do with time whatsoever, but recalls Pluto's associations with death, darkness, and the underworld, all attributes which define Sailor Pluto's identity as a Senshi just as much as "time".
A small quirk occurs in continuity between the manga and anime. Pluto (temporarily) expires in both, but at different times; Pluto's death in the manga occurs much earlier and reawakens the good side of the possessed Chibiusa. However, for all intents and purposes, in the manga the technicality of Pluto existing outside of time means she is able to be reincarnated as a normal woman while still existing back at her post at the Time Gate.
In the Sailor Moon musicals, Sailor Pluto has an unrequited love for King Endymion. It is explicitly mentioned in Eien Denetsu and Shin - Densetsu Kourin, in the song Onna no Ronsou ("Woman's Conflicts").[14]

Unlike most of the other Senshi, Sailor Pluto does not have an image song for the anime, although she does have an instrumental piece called "Garnet Guardian".

Actresses
In the Japanese anime series and movies, Setsuna Meioh is voiced by Chiyoko Kawashima.[16] In the English-language dub, her voice is provided first by Sabrina Grdevich (in the R series and movies), and in the S series (as "Trista Meioh") by Susan Aceron.
In the stage musicals, Setsuna has been played by 8 actresses: Miwa Hosoki, Rei Saitou, Yuki Kamiya, Seiko Nakazawa, Teruyo Watanabe, Yuko Hosaka, Yukiko Nakae, and Miho Yokoi.[17]
Setsuna does not appear in the live-action series.
