Shad Gaspard was extensively involved in sports in high school, specializing in wrestling, track and basketball. He attended college, where he continued to play basketball. After graduating, according to his MySpace page, he became a successful No Holds Barred fighter (35-7) and amateur boxer (57-26), and also worked as a bodyguard for several rappers and actors, such as Puff Daddy, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Mike Tyson.[1]

Gaspard then decided to become a professional wrestler. He made the finals of Tough Enough II, but was replaced after failing a physical. He kept trying to become a professional wrestler, and sought training in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). He debuted in OVW in 2003 as Da Beast, eventually joining Bolin Services, a heel stable led by manager Kenny Bolin. Gaspard acted as Bolin's enforcer, and in February 2004 was placed into a tag team with Carlos Colón.

After Colón left OVW in October 2004 Gaspard left Bolin Services and formed a new tag team with Osama, managed by Mo' Green. In June 2005, he was signed to a developmental contract by World Wrestling Entertainment.

Gaspard later began wrestling under his given name. On the May 24, 2006 OVW television taping, Gaspard and his new partner, The Neighborhoodie, defeated Roadkill and Kasey James to win the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship which they held until July 28, 2006, when they lost their title to CM Punk and Seth Skyfire.

On the September 4, 2006 edition of RAW, promos started airing hyping the debut of Gaspard and Neighborhoodie (now dubbed JTG) as Cryme Tyme[2]. They made their televised debut on the October 16 RAW and then their pay-per-view debut at November's Cyber Sunday.
