Shannon William Hurn (born September 4, 1987 in Angaston, South Australia) is an Australian rules footballer in the Australian Football League.
Hurn was selected in the 2005 AFL Draft and was listed by the West Coast Eagles. Hurn, born in South Australia, passed up a 2005-06 rookie contract with the Southern Redbacks to focus on his AFL career.
Hurn has a stunningly mature body for his age, and was drafted at 188cm and 92kg. Following bulking up in the preseason, he is estimated to now weigh in at 98kg, making him one of the bulkiest rookies to have ever entered the AFL. He made his debut versus the Brisbane Lions in April 2006, kicking a stunning long goal.
Hurn grew up in the Barossa Valley in South Australia and attended Angaston Primary and Nuriootpa High School. Hurn was heavily involved in school and local sporting clubs, allowing him to excel in his favourite sports: Cricket and Australian Football. Because of his love for the two sports, his decision to seek a career in AFL over Cricket would have been presumably difficult.
Hurn’s more professional career began whilst playing his two favourite sports simultaneously. He took on a rookie contract with SACA (South Australian Cricket Association) in 2004, turning down the second one in 2005 to focus on his Football. Hurn played Football for Central Districts Football Club, making it to two premierships in 2004 and 2005. In 2005, Hurn was picked Captain of the U-18 South Australian side and also picked in the U-18 All-Australian Selection in Football.
Picked 13th in the first round in the 2005 draft to West Coast Eagles, Hurn was considered one the top players to come out of South Australia at that time.
