Shaoshan

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Shaoshan (Shaoshan Chinese: 韶山; pinyin: Sháoshān) is an area in Xiangtan, Hunan Province. It is most popularly known as the birthplace of Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China. During the Cultural Revolution, thousands of people visited this area each day, but the stream of tourists has died down. Still, train from Changsha leaves for the now over-sized Shaoshan railway station every morning, and buses travel between Changsha and Shaoshan regularly.

Shaoshan residents have capitalized on their most famous resident and Shaoshan is also the birthplace of Mao's Family Restaurant, a popular restaurant chain that has spread to many other cities.
