Sharan Burrow

Sharan Burrow is the president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. She is the second woman to become president of the ACTU.
Sharan was born in Warren, NSW in 1945 to a family with strong Trade Union involvement. She became a teacher in the early 1980s. This position allowed her to become involved in the NSW Teachers' Federation. She later became president of the Bathurst Trades and Labor Council. Before becoming ACTU president she was also president of the Australian Education Union (AEU) in 1992. Currently she also holds a position in the International Labour Organisation (ILO).
She is also the current President of the International Centre for Trade Union Rights (ICTUR) as well as the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions (ICFTU), having been elected its first female President in 2004. Burrow is also the first president of the newly formed International Trade Union Confederation.
