In cannabis culture, shwag, also known as brown frown, "stress", most often refers to low quality cannabis, generally grown in mass quantities. Shwag typically contains many seeds, which the user must remove, and has a significantly lower THC content, meaning a larger amount must be consumed to feel high. This is opposed to other, higher quality marijuana known as 'chronic' maybe that mid grade but probably that dank, which is given much more attention during the growing process. They usually lack seeds, and contain a significantly larger THC percentage than schwag. "Shwag" is less expensive and is sold in denominations that refer to their cost, such as nickel bags and dime bags ($5, $10). In contrast with "chronic" that is sold by mass, (grams and ounces). Alternate spellings include shwagg, schwag, or schwagg.

Based on the usage in cannabis culture, the term is now used in some contexts to describe things that are unpleasant, unwanted, or subpar. Similarly, the term shwag, along with the term dank, have come to replace the more typical terms "bad" and "good," respectively. The usage of the term is slowly spreading out of cannabis culture and into more mainstream conduits in just the same way that the term "quitting cold turkey" has evolved out of a strictly heroin oriented context and into a context of quitting anything. A typical stoner is also referred to as a "shwagster." Although this is only true unless he smokes prodcuts of far higher quality. In this sense, the term shwag is now a common prefix for any English word, for example shwagtastic or shwagordy.

Another use of the term is to describe an object that gets in the way of performing a task. In that sense, the word was coined by Roger Houcke, who used it to refer to obstructions on exhaust piping that prevent a muffler from fitting.

Also a colloquialism of swag. See Swag (disambiguation) for other meanings.
