Sigma Theta Psi Sorority, Inc., (Σ Θ Ψ) was founded on November 13, 1991, at San Jose State University. The 18 founders, known as the Founding Mothers, felt that there was a need for a sorority that welcomed and embraced young women of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. Each chapter participates in social events, community service, and cultural activities on campus and in local communities.

Sigma Theta Psi's colors are purple, black, and gold. Its mascot is the black panther and its flower is the purple orchid. The sorority's national philanthropy is breast cancer. Each year, the sorority designates a woman living with breast cancer to receive the Gift of Love, which helps to support her medical and health needs.

On February 11, 2006, Sigma Theta Psi was legally incorporated.

The sorority's principles are:

  • Honesty
  • Loyalty
  • Respect
  • Open-Mindedness
  • Leadership
  • Academic Excellence
