Sikh Gurus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sikhism was established by Gurus (literally teachers) over the period of 1469 to 1708. Most of the Gurus were born in Northern India, notably the Punjab, although they travelled extensively from as far west as Arabia to Assam in the east and Maharashtra in the south. Guru Nanak, the first Guru was born in modern day Pakistan, and Guru Gobind Singh, the final Guru was born in Patna, Bihar. When Guru Gobind Singh left this world (made Sikh ascension), he made the Sikh holy scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, the final and eternal Guru of Sikhism. All Sikhs are required to follow the teachings of the Gurus, which upon meditation leads to salvation. The Gurus are considered to be part of God, through union with God. Moreover, because in Sikhism God is believed to be omnipresent, one can consider and understand the Sikh belief that "God is present in all things".

Within Sikhism the ten Gurus of Sikhism from Guru Nanak Dev (the founder of Sikhism) to Guru Gobind Singh are the ten Gurus of Sikhism. Guru Gobind Singh on October 1708 named the Guru Granth Sahib as the final and eternal Guru of Sikhism. Guru Gobind Singh ordered all Sikh to follow the Guru Granth Sahib as their Guru and leader.
There are some excommunicated sects who believe in humans as Gurus (even though this is defying Guru Gobind Singh order to believe in only the Shri Guru Granth Sahib). Sri Guru Gobind Singh said "Sab Sikhan ko hokam hai Guru Manyo Granth" meaning "All Sikhs are commanded to take the Granth as Guru".
